Most of you home pros understand the popularity of the big social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter. You may not like them but you know that’s where your customers are hanging out (like, nearly every single day…)
And as home improvement contractors, you want to be where your potential leads are.
Whether you’re just testing the waters of social media or you’ve been Tweeting and updating your statuses for a while now… I’ve got some bad news for you.
You’re not done.
There’s ANOTHER social media platform you simply can’t ignore. It’s called Google+.
What is it? Basically, it’s the same as Facebook but on Google’s network of online tools. You can create personal Google+ accounts but, also like Facebook, you can also create Business Pages.
Why does it matter? You might have heard that Google+ wasn’t doing that well (which isn’t true anymore – In September, they announced 400 million people had signed up for Google+ and that there were 100 million active monthly users). According to a survey by marketing firm SEOmoz, “only 54.9% of online marketers worldwide said Google+ was one of their top five most-used sites for social media marketing, compared to 87.7% who cited Facebook and 82.7% who cited Twitter.”
So, if major business marketers aren’t using it as much, why should a home improvement contractor?
I’ll tell you why. Because… Google owns it.
It’s their social media baby. And so they will work hard to promote their baby on their search engine. Think about that… Google is the biggest search engine on the planet. Nearly everyone uses it to find what they’re looking for (including local contractors). And if you can get found on Google – on the first page – for free… then you’ll have more website visitors, right?
And that means more leads, more business, and more money.
Let’s say you set up a Google+ account page for your home improvement business. And you can’t find any customers or potential customers on it and you can’t get anyone to “plus” you and join your “circle”… it would be a waste of time, wouldn’t it?
No. Because every Google+ posting, where you “share what’s new”, on your business page, Google will include those results in their search engine results page (SERP).
And this means people have a greater chance of finding you organically. Which means free. And there’s great odds your Google+ status update will rank higher than your website – and that could mean more people finding you on Page 1 of the results page.
Let me give you an example of how it works and how that listing shows up. For every blog post we put on the improveit! 360 website, we also put them on our Facebook page and our Google+ page.
I wrote an article on how builder confidence was at a 6-year high on the blog. I then put the link on Facebook and Google+. I just did a search for “home builder confidence high” and my post is on the first page of Google’s results. But a few spaces down, you’ll see my Google+ result as well. And Facebook is no where to be seen on the page.
